Every story begins with a spark—and in The Seven, that spark is a boy named Darby Stephans. At just ten years old, Darby may seem small, but his journey will shape the fate of his world and everyone in it. He is the first to step beyond the Island’s edge, and in doing so, sets the story in motion.
🧒 Who Is Darby Stephans?
Darby is curious, shy, honest, and kind. As the Wind Pillar in the Seven, he has a quiet strength that often goes unnoticed at first—but it’s his sense of wonder and his courage to follow it that make him unforgettable. While others hesitate, Darby listens to the calling deep within him. His decision to leave the Island sparks the conflict that changes everything.
“The wind knows the way,” Darby whispers, though no one else is there to hear it.
🌊 His Past and the Journey Ahead
Darby’s story begins far from the Island. He was born in Westchester, England, and, in 1708, he boarded the HMS Strafford with his family to start a new life in America. But a violent storm changed everything. Of his family, he was the only survivor. The loss of his family—and his father, his greatest role model—shaped him in quiet, profound ways.
Centuries later, arriving in modern America, Darby is overwhelmed by the strangeness of it all. The food, the clothes, the way people talk—everything is new. But beneath the awe is a steady determination. For years, he has felt called to leave the Island and uncover the mystery of the original Seven. When a prophetic message finally comes, he can no longer stay behind.
🪄 A Quest for Answers
Darby wants to understand what it means to be one of the Seven. He knows they are meant to bring balance and peace, but the path to that destiny is unclear. His greatest obstacle is the lack of knowledge—the original Seven have disappeared into history, and their legacy has become more myth than memory. But Darby refuses to let the past fade.
✍️ From the Author’s Heart
Darby is special to me because he carries the warmth and wonder of people I love. His shy kindness reminds me of my nephews and cousins when they were little—how they’d observe the world with wide eyes but always carry a quiet courage inside. Writing him allows me to reflect on those moments and imagine how a child with that same light might face an extraordinary journey.
